Yoruba obas assure on early settlement of Obasanjo/Jonathan rift

Yoruba Obas’ Conflict Resolution Committee has assured Nigerians not to panic over the face-off between President Goodluck Jonathan and former president, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo.

The committee, which is made up of prominent monarchs in the south western part of the country, maintains the development will soon fizzle out.

The monarchs gave the assurance yesterday in Ibadan, Oyo State after their meeting at the palace of the committee chairman, Oba Frederick Obateru Akinruntan at Alakia.

In attendance at the meeting are Oba Daodu Joel Sunday, Oluyari of Iyari, Ondo State, Oba Matthew Olasheinde, the Jowe of Irukorogha, Ondo State, Oba Ajayi Adeniyi, Gbaluwe of Igbotan Kingdom, Oba Saliu Oyemonla Azeez, Sabigana of Iganna, Oyo State, Oba Akinruntan, Okoro Agija 1, Olugbo of Ugbo Kingdom and Oba Sikirulahi Adelani, Ogun State.

The royal fathers clarified that the duo are friends and they know how to settle such differences.

The monarchs, who spoke through Akinruntan, said, “You know we don’t dabble into politics. They have been friends for ages. They would settle themselves. If you see them fighting on pages of newspapers, it doesn’t mean they are enemies. If any of them has any event now, don’t be surprised to see them turning up.”

The monarchs also spoke on the progress made so far in the resolution of the conflicts among Yoruba obas, revealing that the committee had succeeded in checking provocative utterances that could further promote the ember of disunity among them.

They said efforts of the committee had paid off because it is difficult to see either Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Lamidi Olayiwola or the Ooni of Ife, Oba Okunade Sijuade attack each other like before.

Akinruntan explained further that the committee always meets the royal fathers individually to discuss with them.
